Time to plant the Potatoes

We have our potato bed prepared and have been working on cutting the seed potatoes into chunks for planting. Depending on the size of the set and the number and location of “eyes” sprouting – we get between 2 – 4 chunks from each potato. We like to have 2 eyes on each chunk but if you have a really robust eye, you can get away with 1.  We give them a couple of days after cutting to form a skin on the cut side. That prevents the potato chunks from rotting in the cool spring soil.

You can expect to get between 6 and 13 pounds of potatoes from 1 pound of sets.

Sets are available in our Farmstand. We also have Grow Bags & organic soil if you don’t have a garden spot for them.

Available varieties are Austrian Crescent, Binjte, Rose Gold & Purple Viking

*We have info on growing potatoes under the Garden at Home tab.

Strawberry Plants

We are selling strawberry plants this year

*Plants will be in the Farmstand starting today until they are sold out.

Mara Des Bois strawberry was developed by a French breeding program. This variety produces small to medium fruit, and contains the highest flavor and fragrance of any everbearer. Berries have an attractive red color with a high gloss.  Planted in the spring, Mara Des Bois will produce fruit during the summer into the fall.  The following spring it also produces a good spring crop.

APRIL 20th

APRIL 20th

We purchased bare root plants in late winter and planted them in organic soil. They have been growing in our organic greenhouse to give them a good head start for the season.

Strawberries are an easy plant to grow and you will get berries this year with this everbearing variety. You can either plant them in the ground, in a container or even in a hanging basket. I suggest 3 plants for a 10-14 inch container. If you’re planting in the ground, you can plant 12-18 inches apart in a row.

Growing in a 4 inch container for $3.50 each

Bintje – Suitable for a large container Netherlands heirloom, most widely grown, high yielder, keeps well Netherlands heirloom from 1904 and the most widely-grown yellow variety in the world. Flower Jar Call

Some of what we will be growing this year – Snapdragons, China Asters, Lavender, Stock, Red Amaranth, Persian Cress & Cosmos

We have lots of flowers growing in our greenhouse that will be ready for our cut flower bouquets this summer. In past years, we have provided the jar with the flowers to help keep them happy. We are now totally out of jars.

We really prefer to provide the jar, so are looking for pint size or quart size canning jars. Jars smaller than pint size are not usable for our cut flowers. There are a few things that come in similar size jars (spaghetti sauce, pickles, sauerkraut) and we can use them.

“Mason jar” bouquets from 2020 in pint size canning jars

If you have jars that you would like to drop off, you can leave them in our Farmstand.

Thank you in advance for helping us to continue keeping our flowers happy on their way to making people happy!

Tomato starting time!

Yesterday was a very busy tomato seed starting day – 915 seeds!

Most of these seed trays came with the baby plants we purchased (flowers, succulents & some of our herbs). We wash & disinfect them so that we can use them over and over. When we run out of them, we switch to biodegradable pots or make soil blocks. They still have to sit on a plastic tray, but it really reduces our use of plastic!

Our most beautiful seed packages (and most of our tomatoes) come from Bakers Creek Heirloom Seeds

Some of my favorites – Big Rainbow, Mortgage Lifter, Blue Beauty & Piglet Willy

A couple of new varieties – Golden of Siberia & Jasper

Plus several determinate dwarf varieties for container growing

In the next few weeks, we will add a complete list of varieties with information on how you can reserve your plants.

All of our plants are growing in Organic soil in our Organic greenhouse. We use biodegradable containers as much as possible for the plants we sell.

Early Spring in the Greenhouse

Even though it’s really late winter – it feels like spring (sometimes summer) in the greenhouse. The baby plants are starting to grow – the hot peppers have been moved from their plug size trays into a larger tray (1 more move up before they’re ready) – the cool season veggies are coming along – And, the succulents arrived yesterday!

More sunny days and lots more greenhouse work in the forecast

You can pick up a kit or 2 from our Farmstand cooler for $6.00

So, I made a batch using the ingredients from 1 kit. It took me 15 minutes from washing to finished and made 3 cups of finished salsa.

I remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeno peppers to decrease the heat. I also try not to touch the insides of the peppers and immediately wash my hands.
