Creekside Market Day Saturday

 

Our August Creekside Market Day is August 19th  (this coming Saturday).

In addition to an abundance of veggies, we will have our own honey and our hand-made goats milk soap for sale.

We’re still picking sweet corn (ahead of the raccoons who seem to agree that it’s delicious) and the heirloom tomatoes are in full production. We also have lemon squash, zucchini, cucumbers, a variety of sweet peppers, jalapeno and poblano peppers, garlic and lovely sunflowers!

Come see us in our farm stand from 9 until 2 on Saturday the 19th. 

After 2, the farm stand will continue to be open for veggies

The sweet corn is fantastic this year (and the raccoons agree!)  We will continue to pick daily until it’s gone. We’re also getting some really nice heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, eggplant, lemon squash, cucumbers,  jalapeno peppers, sunflowers and garlic that was harvested in June.

Our hens are doing their best to keep up with the demand for eggs, but we are selling out every day so are re-stocking the cooler as the eggs are laid.

Calico Sweet Corn

And – the sweet corn is ready!

In the cooler in bags – $6.00 per 13 ears. Some bags will have more if the ears are smaller. We’ve been eating it for the past couple of days and it’s fabulous.

Tomatoes!

Our tomatoes are finally ready and in the stand!

 Both full size and cherry are $3.00 per pint.

We also have eggs,  zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant, beans, beets, sweet peppers, garlic, kale and lots of cucumbers.

Dill Pickle Kit

We are selling a Dill Pickle Kit for $5.00. Included are the pickle cucumbers, garlic, dill weed and a mature dill head. We have a recipe for Refrigerator Dills on our page in the Pam s Recipes section.

We also have plenty of slicing cucumbers in various sizes. They make great Bread and Butter pickles.

Creekside Natural Farm Honey

The honey is here!

We are hosting bee hives that are maintained by a local bee keeper. The bees forage on our land which includes 20 acres of pollinator habitat, pollinator friendly trees, our organic gardens and lots of clover and dandelions that cover most of our lawn areas.

This is the first extraction from our hives and will be the lightest honey of the season. Late summer and fall honey will be darker in color because the flowers change with the seasons.

This is 100% honey from our own hives. No added corn syrup and no honey from other locations mixed in. We are selling it in a 1 pound jar for $13.00 or in a 2 ounce sample bear for $3.00.

The honey will be available at our monthly Creekside Market. The July Market will be tomorrow (Saturday July 15th) from 9 till 2.

If you are not able to make it to the market, you can contact us to make arrangements for pick-up. We will not be leaving it in the stand.

Fabulous Beets!

We are having a fabulous beet crop this year – we planted more and they’re loving all the rain. So, we will be selling them by the half bushel (26 pounds) for $26.00 – that’s half of our normal price.

Our Cylindra beets are great for canning due to their “buttery” texture and sweet flavor. You can also use them for juicing. They store for weeks if you remove the tops and keep them in the frig.

Please contact us ahead of time so we can harvest them fresh for you. If you don’t want the tops, let us know – our hens love them!

Creekside Market – July 15th

We are 2 days away from our July Creekside Market – July 15th from 9 am until 2 pm

We will have honey from hives that are maintained on our farm. It was harvested on Sunday and will be delivered to us tomorrow. The pictured bottle is a sample from our bee keeper and it is wonderful! 

We will also have freshly dug garlic – big beautiful bulbs!

Everything we sell is raised or made on our farm so we will have “in season” vegetables – lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, several types of beets, zucchini, eggplant and various herbs. We will be starting to harvest our garlic this week and also hope to be picking beans and tomatoes.

We will have our hand-made goat milk soap made from Staudacher Farms goat milk and some of our yarn from our Suri alpacas.

The Market runs from 9 am until 2 pm in our stand on the farm. After 2, the vegetables and eggs will be in the stand as normal.

Lots of Veggies!

 

The rainy weather may not be great for making hay but the vegetables love it!

We have an abundance of really lovely broccoli, several types of beets & mixed lettuce. We still have some purple cauliflower, sugar snap peas and cabbage and are just starting to pick zucchini. We also have plenty of eggs.

Cylindra Beets are ready!

 

We made our first picking of Cylindra beets this morning. They are sweet and tender and are the favorite of our beet loving customers. They’re in the stand for $3.00 per bunch.

My favorite way to use them is to roast them and add them to a lettuce salad. We also chop the greens and add them to the salad.

We also have freshly picked round beets, mixed lettuce, broccoli, green cauliflower and plenty of eggs from our Animal Welfare Approved hens.

Garlic Scapes

 

What is a garlic scape? It’s the flower stalk of a hard neck garlic plant. Soft neck garlic does not get a scape.  One scape comes up from each plant one time during the growing season. So, when they’re gone – they’re gone for the season.

Garlic scapes are in the stand. $3.00 per bag. There is enough in a bag for a couple of pesto recipes and still some to use for stir fry, add some to your salad or any recipe where you would use green onions and want a little garlic flavor.  My favorite way to use them is minced and mixed with butter to use for garlic bread or over hot pasta or veggies.

Lettuce

Early this morning – before the heat was totaly hideous- picked, washed, spun and bagged lettuce. In the cooler for $3.00 per bag.  Also picked some broccoli sprouts and there are plenty of eggs.

Busy week!

We have so many things happening this week that we can’t share it all. But here are a few of them.

Tomorrow we will be hosting our second Creekside Market here on the farm. The market is held in our stand from 9-2.

We will have plenty of eggs, freshly picked lettuce and broccoli, several types of herbs, our farm made goats milk and honey soap, yarn and fiber from our Suri alpacas AND we had our first batch of meat chickens processed yesterday. If you pre-ordered, I will have them ready for pick up. We have some that are not spoken for so we will be selling those until they are sold out.

Chicken Pick-up & June Creekside Market

 

 

Our June Creekside Market will be one week from today on June 10th from 9 am until 2 pm.

We will have fresh chicken available for pick-up. We prefer that you pre-order if you would like more than 1 or 2 so that we can have it ready for you.

Our chickens are raised outside and their shelter is moved to fresh grass daily. They eat certified organic feed (Never any GMO grain).

We will be trying a new processor this year (only 2 hours away rather than 3) and expect the packaging will be the same as our old processor. We offer a whole chicken – either un-cut or cut into 10 pieces. Our price for the un-cut is still $4.00 per pound and the chicken will average 3.5 to 4 pounds. The processor charges us for the cutting so add $1.50 per chicken for cut up.

Our processing day is Thursday so there will be a limited amount of fresh chicken available on Saturday. If you would like to place an order, either call 815-467-5259 or email us at pam@creeksidenaturalfarm.com. We will need your name, phone number and the quantity you want.

We will also have our hand made goats milk soap, alpaca items, plenty of eggs and are starting to pick broccoli and lettuce.

Glass Gem Corn Seed

 

 

 

 

We have seed available from our Glass Gem corn. This is seed that was selected from last years crop for a wide range of color. They are packaged in plastic bags and in our cooler in the stand. Plant in a block of 4 rows for best pollination and color mix

$2.00 for a 1.5 oz bag (approx. 200 seeds)

Organic Veggie Plants

 

It’s finally warm enough to keep the tomato and pepper plants in the stand!

We grow our plants in organic potting soil and never use any type of insecticide or fungicide. Some of the tomato varieties we have are Cherokee Purple, Mortgage Lifter, Black Heirloom, Black Beauty, Royal Hillbilly, Paul Robeson, Sungold Cherry, Black Cherry, Sunrise Bumblebee, Pink Bumblebee, Piglet Willie and Galiana. We have a few plants of each variety and expect that they will be gone by the end of the weekend.

Our pepper varieties are, King of the North, Flavorburst, Lunchbox  Mix, Aura, Glow, Melrose, Purple jalapeno and Poblano.

All plants are $2.50 each.

New this year – Creekside Market!

 

 

 

 

 

We will be holding our own market on the farm this summer rather than packing up and hauling everything to Morris. The first Market will be this coming Saturday-May 6th-from 9 until 2 pm.

 

We will be in our vegetable stand with our own seasonal produce, eggs, stone ground heirloom cornmeal, organic tomato and sweet pepper transplants, alpaca fiber items (yarn, nest ball kits, raw fiber), and our own home-made soap!

The stand will still continue to be open during our normal hours – Every day from 8 am until 7 pm but will not be stocked with the alpaca items, soap or frozen chickens when they become available. 

Come out and visit this Saturday! We can answer your questions about the plants we have available and if the weather is nice enough, I will be spinning some fiber into yarn with my spinning wheel!

After a long week with lots of planting, we are ready for the coming rain (and a chiropractic adjustment) – LOL!

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, beets, lettuce, potatoes, spinach, strawberry plants and zinnias – all in the ground!

Organic veggie plants

We will have organic transplants available for sale beginning on May 6th.

They are currently getting acclimated to the cooler temperatures and will be ready for planting in your garden as soon as the danger of frost has passed. Tomatoes do not like temperatures below 50 degrees and will be stunted by too many cool nights. And, peppers are even more sensitive to cold. So, help your plants live up to their full potential by planting them at the correct time!

We grow our seeds in organic soil in our own greenhouse with no insecticides or chemicals of any type. We have a variety of heirloom tomatoes and several different types of sweet peppers.

Asparagus season

We are just beginning to harvest asparagus! We have a few bags in the stand – $5.00 per bag and will also be adding wheat berries so you can make this delicious salad. The recipe is on our blog.

We also have eggs in the stand so you can make our other favorite asparagus dish – scrambled eggs with asparagus.

Bees and the honey they make!

Super excited by today’s development!

 We were contacted by a local bee keeper who would like to place some of his hives on our farm! There are not enough exclamation points to convey how excited I am!!!!! He will maintain the hives, which is fantastic since I have a bee allergy, and we will get the benefits of the pollination AND HONEY from our own farm! 

This will be the perfect compliment to our pollinator habitat – 20 acres of bee food!

Morning Project

Our morning project was building a gate in the lean to so that Thomas and Luna can easily (meaning we don’t need to put halters and leads on) have access to the pasture that’s been re-seeded and “resting” since last spring. Since we only want them in there for a couple of hours at a time, the gate eliminates lots of stressful catching.

I love helping my family with the garden, there are so much things to do around here. Taking care of the animals, feeding them everyday, taking care of the crops, watering them when the soil is too dry and maintaining everything as clean as you possibly can.

For the past 3 months we have been giving it a thought, and finally agreed on starting with our new project. We found this website https://www.doitallcontracting.ca online where we contacted Home Renovations Do It All Contracting company and they helped us build some extra storage in the farm and also remodel our kitchen, because years have passed since we checked the house with experts.

We have opened the farm stand and stocked the cooler with eggs!

Our egg price remains the same as last year – $5.00 per dozen

Our hens eat a diet of certified organic grains, oats and peas that we grow on our farm and all the things they can find outside. They have free access to pasture every day and are certified by the most stringent animal welfare group – Animal Welfare Approved.

Because this is a working farm with things like electric fencing to protect our hens and alpacas from predators, we ask that you remain in the area immediately surrounding the Farm Stand. Also, please keep your children with you at all times.

Our stand hours are 8am until dusk. Our stand is not lighted so we can’t allow shopping after dark.

We accept cash for payment and are not always available to make change.

Winter Chores and Projects


 

 

 

 

 

 

Just in case anyone wondered what we do in the winter – here is a partial list

Start seeds, read books (that inspire us to continue what we’re doing), make lovely yarn, re-paint our wagon/sign (so people can actually read it), build hay racks, keep little (and big) alpacas warm and full, raise hens (so we will have eggs this spring) – and dream about summer and a good tomato!
