A warm day or 2 always make us anxious to get something planted. So, what can we plant when it’s still too cold for tomatoes, beans and other warmth loving plants?
Some of the things we planted last week are lettuce, spinach, kale and sugar snap peas. In the next week, we will plant beets and start putting out transplants of cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. We will have those cool season transplants available in our stand next week.
black seeded Simpson lettuce
We start planting tomatoes, eggplant and peppers AFTER Mothers DAY – and sometimes later if it falls early in the month or the weather forecast is still cold. I know it’s tempting to plant earlier, but these plants will be not grow to their full potential if the temps overnight are below 50 degrees. We will have a nice variety of organic heirloom tomatoes, eggplant and peppers available at the appropriate planting time.
Now is a great time to get your garden ready for the warm weather ahead. We have alpaca “beans” available to improve your soil. I can put them in our farmstand for you on request. We have cat litter buckets full for $6.00.
Our winter flock is still producing well and out young hens are winding up. So, we have plenty of eggs. We are getting small/medium eggs from the young hens and have those in 18 pack cartons for $5.00.
18 pack of medium/small eggs $5.00
The regular size eggs are $5.00 per dozen.
Eggs are in the cooler in the farm stand.
Our hens have free access to pasture and are fed a diet of certified organic ground feed and whole grains (wheat and oats) that we raised on our farm.
We are starting the seasonal wind up with lots of life on the farm and one departure.
We will have a larger selection of organic plants this year. In addition the the heirloom tomatoes, we will also have eggplant, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, herbs, pansies and potatoes!
Lemon thyme, rosemary and succulents
Cilantro
Lime, lemon and sweet basil
Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage enjoying the cooler temperature under the benches
Tomatoes, eggplant and peppers enjoying the warmth on the greenhouse benches
2 big boxes of seed potatoes
Sourdough starter made with our Turkey Red whole wheat flour
Our antique combine loaded up and moving on to a new home where it will be living the “retirement” life.
Our farm stand is open and stocked with eggs. We also have bunches of pussy willow branches.
If you’re looking for our honey, you can contact us ahead of coming out.
No sign of any more deep freezes in the forecast. So, we cleaned the cooler, plugged it in and stocked it with eggs!
We have our regular eggs which are a mix of sizes ranging from jumbo to medium.
We will also be selling eggs from our young hens as they start to lay. They will be packaged according to size (small or medium) and priced accordingly. ($3.00 and $4.00).
Our hens have free access to pasture where they can eat vegetation, scratch in the dirt and enjoy the sunshine. In addition to what they pick up on their own, we provide them with a certified organic ground feed from Yorktown Organics in Tampico Illinois, oats and wheat that we grow on our farm using organic methods and lots of vegetable scraps.
Un-cleaned wheat going into the screens, Clean wheat comes out the bottom, Cleaned wheat stone ground into whole wheat flour
We have cleaned wheat berries and freshly ground flour available. Wheat berries are in a 1 quart container for $3.00 and flour is $5.00 for a 3 pound bag
As the name suggests, ‘Turkey’ Hard Red Winter Wheat is a tall, winter hardy cultivar, grown in the Great Plains. This wheat variety has a unique, rich, and complex flavor and excellent baking qualities.
This particular variety can be traced to Crimea between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov in the early 19th century and earlier to Turkey to the south of the Black Sea. Mennonite immigrants brought it to the United States in the early 1870s, introducing it to the areas surrounding Marian, Reno and Harvey Counties in Kansas. It became the dominant hard red winter wheat in Kansas and much of the Great Plains bread basket and was the major hard winter variety in the 1920s. Significant acreage was planted in Kansas until the mid-1940s when it was replaced with modern higher-yielding cultivars.
The wheat has excellent flavor, good protein quantity and quality.
Yesterday Renee and I bought baby plants of some things that don’t start well from seed. In addition to the succulents, we got some lemon thyme and rosemary (plus a few flowers because we couldn’t resist). Brought them all home and potted them up in organic soil.
Honey, cornmeal, eggs, ect… are available in the winter by appointment only so Please contact us ahead of coming out (info below). This ever changing weather can sometimes lead to very slippery conditions – especially in the country.
Our honey is pure 100% honey from hives on our farm. Our bees have 76 acres of “crops” to forage from. That includes more than 20 acres of pollinator habitat, several acres of vegetables, 30 acres of hay and pasture and our dandelion and clover filled yard. We farm using organic practices (no GMO’s). While we can’t control where our bees forage, we really can’t see any reason for them to leave this bee friendly paradise!
Raw honey from hives on our farm
Raw honey is $13.00 per 1 pound jar
Comb honey is $20.00 per container
We have Floriani Red Flint corn – grown here with organic practices – stone ground on our farm to a coarse grind. Floriani is a hard corn that was developed in Italy for polenta or grits. We have a delicious polenta recipe on our site.
We also have heirloom yellow cornmeal that is a great baking cornmeal.
Cornmeal is $5.00 per bag
Wheat berries can be used like ferro – cooked whole ( we have a recipe on our site). They can also be ground into flour.
Wheat Berries are $3.00 per container
We kept a very small winter flock this year but they are working overtime. So, we have a limited amount of eggs available. Our hens eat a combination of certified organic ground feed and some whole grains (wheat and oats) that we grow on our farm using organic methods. They also get vegetable scraps – sourdough starter – pumpkins from last years garden – and anything they can find in the pasture.
Comb honey is sections of the hexagonal-shaped beeswax cells of the honeycomb that contain raw honey that have been cut from the wooden frames of a beehive.
It is the rawest honey available and contains all of the pollen, enzymes, propolis, vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, minerals, and aromatics that the honey had in the hive.
Comb honey is more expensive than raw liquid bottled honey. Bottled honey is extracted from the beeswax comb and the comb is able to be used again. Since the comb is completely removed to produce comb honey, the bees and beekeeper must work harder to produce it.
We have a very limited amount of comb honey available.
The polar vortex seems to be over, the driveway has been cleared and our bee keeper has brought us over some freshly bottled honey!

We will be offering seed potatoes this season. We’ve chosen 3 of our favorites and 2 “new to us” varieties (Viking Red and Masquerade). We will sell them in 1 pound packages and also as transplants in biodegradable pots with organic soil.
Desiree
The most popular “red” potato in Europe. Round to oblong tubers, satin-like pinkish/red skin and gourmet quality creamy-yellow flesh. Prolific yields of excellent all-around cooking potatoes. Very resistant to common diseases. An easy and very reliable gourmet potato to grow.
Nicola
Delicious German potato with low glycemic level. Uniform medium-large oblong tubers have smooth yellow skin and light yellow flesh. Firm waxy texture is excellent for boiling and salads. High yield potential. SSE staff favorite. 90-110 days.
La Ratte Fingerling
Long prized by French chefs as a top quality fingerling. We cannot recommend this variety highly enough, an absolute delight to cook with. Long uniform tubers, yellow flesh with firm waxy texture and a nice nutty flavor, holds together very well. Especially good for potato salad or as a boiled potato. We love it roasted with garlic!
Viking Red
Viking has main season maturity but has early tuber set. Yielding ability is high. Plants are medium sized, upright and vigorous. Tubers are large, oblong to round, medium thick, with a smooth, medium to deep red skin and white flesh. Eyes are shallow and well distributed. Culinary quality is excellent.
Masquerade
A yellow-skinned potato that’s all dressed up in a cloak of purple. These slightly flattened, oval tubers have moist, yellow flesh, an irresistible creamy, rich flavor, and an elevated anthocyanin content. Sized nicely to bake whole, Masquerade makes a triumphant presentation at the table, and doesn’t disappoint on the palate. A very versatile potato, it’s delicious mashed or roasted as well. Vigorous plants deliver very high yields.
